The challenge of the working group is to produce a document that systematizes the analysis, arguments, data, and examples that help to promote discussion about the structural root causes of climate change. We aim to reveal how and in what way the rise in greenhouse gases are a product of a model of life and development under the capitalist system that is premised on the supremacy of human beings over nature, and to identify sectors and concrete examples in which we may perceive that structural relationship between the dominant system and climate change.
We would really appreciate your comments, proposals and contributions you can make to the debate in this working group.

CONFERENCE GATHERS MOMENTUM AND SUPPORT

Since Bolivia announced the Conference, it has been greeted with ever more support and enthusiasm internationally. At the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, participants gave firm support to the conference as the next key step in the struggle against climate change. Many international networks, such as Friends of the Earth, Climate Justice Network, Via Campesina, 350.org. Prominent individuals such as Noam Chomsky, Brazilian theologian Leonardo Boff, and former UN General Assembly President Miguel D’escoto as well as Green and Left parliamentarians from Europe and elsewhere have praised the initiative.

While in Copenhagen, more than 160 governments were excluded from final negotiations of the poorly-named “Copenhagen Accord”; in Cochabamba, 192 governments and UN institutions working on climate have all been invited by the Plurinational State of Bolivia to be present and to join debates with social movements. This will be the first time that a global peoples’ event will be held that is open to all governments.

16 WORKING GROUPS START DISCUSSION VIA INTERNET

The core work of the Conference will be done in Working Groups. Each one will start their work via email, building consensus and putting forward proposals, which will be considered and enriched in the meetings in person that will take place during the actual conference in Cochabamba.

The idea is to construct in Cochabamba in an inclusive and participative way a grand “Peoples’ Accord to save life and Mother Earth.”

It is possible to participate, virtually, in up to five working groups. The working groups are also open to those who can not travel to Cochabamba.

Step two: With the registration number you receive via email, subscribe to the Working Groups you want to join

Step three: You will receive via email comments and proposals of all those who are subscribed to your Working Group and will also be able to share your opinions and proposals with others in the Group.

Each Working Group during its virtual existence pre-conference must develop by the beginning of April a working document of two or three pages which will serve as the basis for discussion during the conference in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

In the next few days, we will also set up other Working Groups that have been proposed by various participating organizations and groups.

REGISTERING SELF-ORGANIZED EVENTS

Organizations which want to hold an event (workshop, seminar, meeting, video projection or other) have until 15 March to send an email to selforganized@cmpcc.org with the following information:

• Applicant Organization (priority will be given to events proposed by several organizations)
• Country, Region or Network
• Contact person/Event coordinator
• Email
• Website
• Event title
• Brief description of event content
• Event format (workshop, panel, video projection, cultural event etc)
• List of speakers
• Number of people expected to attend event
• Translation (Only Spanish-English translation will be available to be paid by the applicant organization)
• Other requirements (amplification, projector, screen to be paid by the applicant organization)

Based on the number of requests and the amount of available space the self-organized events will be defined with the aim of promoting unity amongst common initiatives.

At the end of March, the Self Organized Events will be included in the Conference Programme.

Chiang Mai now has two known ( and maybe more) people who have registered for the event. Tomoko & Ricky took part in an international phone conference with Pablo Solon the Bolivian Ambassador to the UN on 16th.

Discussions is growing both through the conference website and from emails from registered participants.

On Strategies “Bolivia put forth that the “shared vision” could not be limited to a goal for a minimum rise in temperature, but that it should include an integral discussion of financial and technological mechanisms and the model of “development” that should be shared in order to reach an agreed-upon goal.”
